Doubts about women in combat don’t stand up to history
Our PhD candidate Ashleigh Percival Borley has written a timely piece for The Conversation addressing recent debates about the role of women in combat across the world. A former British Army combat medic who served in Afghanistan, Ash writes that ‘I know from experience that competence, professionalism, teamwork and a certain amount of luck all matter on the battlefield. A person’s gender does not.’
In support of this Ash draws on research into the role of women in the SOE, pointing out that women agents in the agency ‘assassinated, sabotaged and led resistance forces’ during the Second World War.
